Standing at the heart of Philadelphia’s iconic Boathouse Row, the Burk-Bergman Boathouse has watched 150 years of rowing history move along the Schuylkill. The nationally treasured landmark called for a thoughtful renewal—one that honored its past while advancing the way teams train today. The renovation preserved the boathouse’s storied exterior and central place along the riverfront, while transforming the interior into a high-performance, inclusive home for Penn’s varsity rowing programs. Panoramic water views flood expanded training areas. Modernized locker rooms, an ADA-accessible elevator, and a new grand hall power both daily training and team life beyond the water. Alive, purposeful, and built around the rhythms of the athletes who call it home, the project re-energized a National Historic Landmark—earning honors from AIA Pennsylvania, Architizer, IIDA, Athletic Business, and leading preservation organizations across the region.
